Description
Winter’s Glow – Open Edition Print
Captured on January 9, 2025, in Ludington, Michigan, “Winter’s Glow” features the Ludington North Breakwater Light standing resilient against the cold winter waves. The icy break wall leads the eye toward the lighthouse, framed by soft, pastel hues in the sky as the sun begins its slow descent behind dense clouds. Though the sun was still a half-hour from the horizon, subtle breaks in the cloud cover allowed a warm glow to peek through, casting a delicate reflection on the lighthouse and the icy waters below.
Anticipating this atmospheric scene, I prepared for the shifting light throughout the day. Using a Nikon D850 paired with a Nikkor 70-200mm lens and a 2x adaptor, I captured this handheld at 400mm, relying on stabilization to secure the shot. With my tripod mount buried in my gear or still on Animaashi, I wasn’t about to miss this fleeting moment searching for it. To compensate, I increased the ISO to 800 and shot at f/5.6 with a shutter speed of 1/250 second, balancing sharpness and clarity in the low light.
The minimalist composition was intentional. Though I captured other frames that included the southern break wall light, I chose this tighter crop to highlight the lighthouse and the serene complexity of the winter sky. A closer look reveals a flock of seagulls circling the lighthouse, adding subtle movement to the stillness of the scene—details that can be explored further in the gallery images.
